Seagate ST500LM012 / Samsung HN-M500MBB

Postby RescueDRL@gmail.com » 15.01.14, 18:00

So, with these Seagate/Samsung FrankenDrives, do I post in Seagate forum or Samsung forum?

Anyway, this Samsung HN-M500MBB/D is making a sound inside which might be clicking. It is
persistent and the drive stays BSY and spinning on PC3KUDMA.

Opened in clean room, there's 1 platter, 2 heads and top surface is pristeen, heads are present,
and not bent-looking, also clean filter.

Drive stayed BSY overnight, at least 12 hours, same sound coming from inside.

What would you suggest?

Any help greatly appreciated.

(Would it be wrong to also post this on HDDGURU?)

Thanks, Drew

The noise could be a number of problems, probably some head problem. This is a Samsung drive with seagate label. It probably was not a good idea to leave it powered for an excessive time. Can you connect terminal and post the output here?

I assume I am supposed to run the Seagate F3 utility.

But what model to I pick? The drive won't ID when it's always BSY.

(When I guess a model, there is nothing in the Terminal window)

Thanks,

Forget to mention, nothing more shows in the Terminal
window when I do soft reset. Drive is always BSY.
Terminal window is empty.

If drive powers then it will output some terminal commands.

Remember this is a Samsung HDD and wont operate in Seagate utility over Seagate Baud Rate config

Right, thanks for the guidance. Here is what the Terminal output shows (repeats forever until power off):

Thank you experts! I can see the word err, but I am not sure where you know
it's the second head, head 1, that has the problem.

You don't have to reply, but would be nice.

Thanks again for your help, I was hoping F/W problem but no...
