Seagate Green ST2000DL003 CC45

Postby Towerrat79 » 05.08.11, 13:05

Greetings
The Seagate drive will not correctly identify itself. Entering the Utility I manually choose the Barracuda 7200.12, and start the utility. I receive the error HDD ID has not been read.., select Yes and the utility opens. The following lights are on DRD, DSC, and DRQ a soft reset will set the lights to BRD and DSC. But it will not read the hard drive model, Serial..

Running the Utility the hard drive is not recognized but the drive spins up, there is no clicking sound, and the log screen shows

Model : HDD ID has not been read
Serial :
Firmware :
Capacity : .49 MB (1 000)

Current utility options are outdated!

Loading default settings!
Use the options dialog to review and save utility settings.
Then press OK!

Tech Key...
Drive not ready

I switch to the Terminal Tab, power off the drive and then power it on, I receive the following message:

Eventually the drive will show BRD and DSC, but when I try to read the Hard Drive ID the lights change to BSY, BRD and DSC.

At times the drive will show the correct model number

Has anyone come across this error?
Thanks
Frank

Hi
Sometimes the problem may be solved by SMART/Glist clearing or translator regenerating.
Do you have terminal access? To check it, restart power and immediately press many times CTRL+Z.
If F3T> will appear try to clear smart and restart power. If behavior will be the same, try to clear Glist.
If Glist clearing will not help also, try to make next steps:
Get terminal access
Go to 7 level
Type
F3 7>m100 - press enter
Paste here all logs.
Also write please more detailed about

"At times the drive will show the correct model number
Model : ST2000DL003-9VT166
Serial : 5YD3WHQC
Firmware : CC45
Capacity : 1 863.02 GB (3 907 029 168)"

When does it show full ID and what error do you get if you try to read user sectors at that time?

Hello Igor, thank you for the reply

Firstly the section "At times the drive will show the correct model number" In the Utility Section, I would power on the drive, quickly Press the Run Utility Button (before BSY Light was off), sometimes the drive would display the model number. If I waited for the drive to not be busy, then I would get the generic Capacity: .49 (1 000) model information.

On to your recommendation.
I cleared the SMART/GLIST as well as went to terminal mode 7 and inputted m100 (Please see file Terminal_log.log)

After the above process, in the Utility Section, I would turn the power on to the drive, and then run the utility. The Utilty would find the correct drive number 7200.12 and I would received the messages in the attachments. When I tried to read the CP again, I received the error

LED: 000000EE and the drive remained BSY

Using DE, I attempted to access the customers data.
The initial window of DE would open after map creation and Preliminary Filling in were accomplished. I then selected the Explorer button and after a short time the following Registers were lite: DRD DSC ERR and UNC No file structure was displayed in the results.

I did not do the translator regeneration yet, but will await your response from the above information.
Frank

Hi

Try to perform next steps (you will need newest version of utility):
turn power on
immediately run utility
utility should be initialized properly
restart power again and immediately go to "Work with SA" - "HDD ID editing"
uncheck all checkboxes except first one "Show additional diag msg in terminal" and check "Switch HDD power supply OFF/ON before saving"

Press OK.

Hi Igor
I had to paste the results into the text box, for I could not attach a document. I was able to accomplish the HD ID Editing without a problem. The hard drive spins up, and reports its status as DRD DSC. In the utility the drive seems to be OK. In DE I still get the errors DRD DSC ERR and UNC. They stay lit

Do you want me to regenerate the translator now?

Can you create head map in DE? If so, check reading by each head separately.
As I understand you can see proper ID in utility always. Right?
Can you save SA modules now?
Can you read user sectors via sector editor in Seagate F3 utility?

I could create the head map in DE; however, all of the heads (one at a time) produced failures. DRD DSC ERR and UNC.
I can see the proper hard drive information and all of the information is correct.
I can and have saved the SA Modules, but I continually receive errors when I try to save the SA CP modules.
CP Files individually I can read all except 000A, 000F, 0010, 0012
When I try to use the Sector Editor in the utility I receive a popup error Read Error (48-bit) readiness timeout (1000)ms.

Hi Igor
When working on this drive within the utility, I receive the following messages in red:
BGD15D.CCD4.AACT00.CC45
Current utility options are outdated!

Firstly, what do they mean and how do I fix this error?

It means that utility options are outdated :)
To solve it, run utility, go tools - options, press on the button "Seagate F3 architecture... ", press OK (do not change anything), and OK one more time. Restart utility. Utility options will be updated.

Regenerated Translator Result OK
Tried to use Sector Edit (read only) Sector 0, 63 received Read Error (48 bit) device error detected (UNC) with DRD DSC ERR and UNC lit. Soft reset and the drive went back to ready DRD and DSC.

What about sectors in the middle and in the end of the disk? Are they readable?
Run command "Show User Track Slip List" from user commands menu and attach here log of the reading. You can attach it in RAR file.

I receive the same error through out the drive. I ran Show User Track Slip List as requested and the results are attached. I looked around further and it does not appear that the SMART was cleared. I tried a couple of times; however, attached is the result when I reviewed it after clearing it.
