WD40EAAZ -22BMGB0 Module 190, SMR zone problem

Postby AT3000_user » 25.07.24, 04:46

Hello

I have a WD40EAAZ -22BMGB0 drive that is not supported by the latest version of the PC3000 express. It's a SMR drive and seems to have
module 190 or SMR Zone problem. On power-on, clicks 2 times spins down, loses readiness and comes back
again, and becomes ready. Very rare and strange behavior for WD drives. Since it is not supported, I choose
VeniceR and entered utility. I could backup all modules except for 190 (both 0 and 1). Because of the
mentioned problem, user area is not accessible. Head tests show all heads are OK.
In module check 190 appears to be OK. I could backup 0,1 copy of module 190 using ID instead of ABA method.
Problem is, I tried to access data by PBA access using 190, but is not possible because it says: "Can`t recognize SMR zone table structure".
Not sure problem is with Module 190, SMR zone or incompatibility of the utility for this drive.
Any suggestions or hints on how to access data on this drive are greatly appreciated.

This is VeniceRP family drive.
This is a CMR-emulation drive not an SMR drive, meaning that 190 does not change during drive's normal operation.
So it's unlikely to be a 190 problem, the problem is somewhere else.

Thanks for comment, Doomer.

AceLab's brilliant people assisted me in solving the problem.
The problem was indeed in the corrupted 190 module. I didn't realize it wasn't a SMR drive.
By the way, what is the CMR-emulation drive?
You mean a SMR drive that emulates a CMR drive?

Yes, WD increased the number of SMR zones, so the drive can re-write them much faster, performing very similar to a CMR drive.
