st500lt012 I have bought 2 drives that appear to be good matches. As a test I pu the customers board on the donors to guage if it attempts to come ready.
If it locks onto the servo then chances are good that the heads have read compatibility.
customers drive does 3 big head sweeps and spins down with this message. There are no signs of crashing.

Re: ST500LT012-9WS142-188 - CfwDiscCode Not Loaded
drdoc,
If your patient HSA has at least 1 working head, you can reinstall it and it should initialize without this CFW error giving you access to the SA and user area.
With this model, I've also seen that using the native ROM, but one from saved from a different date, will result in the drive staying spinning.
It seems like an overlay issue and/or head computability issue but I can't say for sure.
Did you ever resolve the issue?
