WD20SMZW-11YFCS0 can't block SA to get into ROM

Postby osity » 17.12.20, 21:00

Hello, Drive is a WD WD20SMZW-11YFCS0
I assume Palmer family.
I'm Running PC3K ver. 6.6.36.

Is it still required to get an unlocked PCB for this drive to access ROM or is there another way to get into the ROM on this model?

It's Charger.

Yes, easiest way is to use unlocked PCB to get to SA.

Charger is not in my PC3K 2.5" list of drives. Did they add it in the more recent versions of the software?

Got my unlocked PCB.
I tried to run a "slow responding" but got a structure error. Is that not possible with this family?

Never run slow responding on a WD SMR drive.
Totally different structure and can actually brick the drive according to Ace Labs.

well I'm glad it didn't work then. :)
Are there many other SMR families? I'm assuming it's a short list for now.

Pretty much all drives produced by WD and Seagate for the last two years have been SMR.

So it seems the use of "slow responding" will come to an end once all the old drives disappear..
