Client is looking for files with a cr2 extension

Postby osity » 06.12.17, 23:36

I don't see it in grep refenrences. How do I add it to the grep search for raw recovery?

Ace has a good example on their blog. Here it is "How to extract GREP regular expression for new type of files".

Mr. Amarbir is right. These files are recognized via Data Extractor.

CR2 and some other RAW image formats don't always follow a standard format. Seems that everytime Cannon makes a new camera we have to update the script or write our own to recover them. It may be worthwhile to ask the customer for a few sample files to see if they follow the normal format.

Also, raw pictures sometimes interchange their extensions. So files that were originally named *.CR2 may be recovered as a *.DNG or something like that.

I think in wealthy countries like the USA there are more people who've always got to have the latest/greatest/newest cameras/phones/whatever and can actually afford to buy them right away. So often cases show up here before recovery software has had time to update their scripts. I remember having to create my own for iPhone 6 jpg picture script when a case came in just weeks after the phone was released and someone already deleted a bunch of them from their computer. Turned out it was a non-standard embedded thumbnail causing most data recovery software to mistakenly think it was the end of the file when it had just reached the end of the thumbnail. I'm sure now almost any data recovery program can recover those same pictures, but that week nothing was working except the xml I wrote myself for R-Studio.

Dmitriy,
CRV and CRW are showing up but no CR2 files are showing up in the RAW recovery reference book.
