ST4000LM016-1N2170 Low Current Spin

Postby obxspook » 02.11.17, 08:40

So I was able to unlock the SA and save all the resources. 10 heads. All but one are acting normal. I was able to save all data from the 9 heads working normally. When I attempt to save data from the weak head, it will read then fail and lose readiness. When I restart the drive the terminal says this:
Boot 0x80M
Low Current Spin
FAIL Servo Op=0100 Resp=0007
0100 0001 0000 0001 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000
ResponseFrame 1640 0087 8252 F180 0008 0000 0000 0000 0B88 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0E2E 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000

Here's where it get's kind of weird. If I leave it alone for a bit, it'll work again, become ready and allow data access again. Resistance between motor coils seems to be 2.4 Ohm (but I'm not completely sure I measured correctly) I don't have another drive of the same family to compare to.

Am I just looking at a bad head here or is it something else?

I've seen the "low current spin" message on drives that were working perfectly fine, so I don't think that's anything to be concerned about.

I suspect the long wait until you have data access may relate to media cache or some background process that can probably be disabled in system file 93. Just be sure you have a backup of everything as I'm not totally sure this model is fully supported.

Sir ,
low current spin has nothing to do with this ,Did you clone MFT and then make a map of selected files and started cloning ,How much data is left on weak head if you have done this

OK thanks, I suspected it has nothing to do with the low current spin, I just wanted to make sure. I have backups of all system files, media cache is disabled along with all the other usual stuff you want to do before a recovery. It's a 4TB drive that's almost completely full, so unfortunately the remaining head that's weak/bad has a little more than 350GB needed to be recovered off of it.

Which is thrilling with these newer tiny Seagates! Sometimes I wish I had baby hands!

Check V4 log, probably there are many entries relating to poor head. Clear it and see if it improves. If not, then I suspect you will need to intervene and replace the complete head assembly

M10TDP family I think this should be, and should be unlockable in PC3K...
