Well, I see it's failing to read the SPT (aerial density) which usually indicates a head failure. Try editing the head map in RAM to 0 0 0 0 and/or 1 1 1 1 then perform a soft reset and see if you can read the SA SPT then. Could be just one bad head, or could be all of them.

Thanks to DataMedics for a good advice. I just would like to remind that some drive families require the loader in RAM for head map editing.

Also tell us: Is the disc rotates? Is it rotates with blocked SA access in ROM?
If it's not, most possibly the heads are really bad.

The disk starts spinning up, there is a clicking sound as it tries to read data, and then it spins down.

When I select "RAM Head map editing" I get the following errors:

Code: Select all

Code type to check...................... : TypeN
Code addr............................... : FFE00000
Code size............................... : 327680
Code reading............................ : RAM Range FFE00000 (050000) reading error Device Error Detected: "VSC ERR KEY SECTOR MUST PRECEED DATA XFER REQUEST"
No HDD RAM access, LDR upload is recomended

Code type to check...................... : Type1
Code addr............................... : 1081A800
Code size............................... : 327680
Code reading............................ : RAM Range 1081A800 (050000) reading error; unexpected error:  -; unexpected error: Operation aborted
No HDD RAM access, LDR upload is recomended

I really appreciate you guys taking your time to "talk me through" this!

rogaland, load the loader into RAM using Work with RAM->LDR file loading. Use the resources from same ROM FW version donor. Look for resources here: http://files.hddguru.com/download/PC-30 ... 20utility/

Then go to Work with RAM->RAM head map changing. Here is some kind of manual: http://blog.acelab.eu.com/ram-head- ... -case.html

Thank you very much Maxim. (I'm still waiting to get on a basic PC-3000 training course so I need some hand-holding)

According to PC-3000 my HD has ROM version 0015001R. Not sure if any of the files at http://files.hddguru.com/download/PC-3000-UDMA%20Support/WDC%20Marvell%20family%20utility/DragFly2/ will do the trick? I notice that the only 15001R match I get is from a WD10EARS-67Y5B1, but maybe the loader is the same?

rogaland, these resources will give you a loader 0015001R: http://files.hddguru.com/download/PC-30 ... 831179.rar

Should I go with "Write overlay in ram"?

After editing the head map, how do I then test if I can read SA? Using SA Structure test for example?

rogaland, load the loader files, and then follow this manual to edit the head map: http://blog.acelab.eu.com/ram-head- ... -case.html
