Is the WD30NMVW-11C3NS2 supported?

Postby Joeb16 » 21.06.16, 17:47

Hi
I have WD30NMVW-11C3NS2 drive that does not have any com-port connection. Is this drive supported for reading firmware?
Is there a way of connecting the PCB to a com-port?
Is there a SATA donor drive that could be used? I have looked at the WD30NPVX-00N2PT0 with a PCB 2060-800022-300 03P. And has the data encryption key been found?
Is there a way of soldering a SATA connector to this PCB?
PCB number: 2060-800041-000R

you can solder TX/RX connection to points next to the interface connection. Data is encrypted but so far I do not think PC3K can decrypt or identify the encryption key.

Family is Pebble and can be accessed via Shrek utility. there is way to solder SATA connector to it, alternatively PCB from SATA variant you write about will work also.

I guess this drive sounds fine, heads calibrate fine, but no identification or access?

No the drive is having seek problems at start up. There are small scratches on the outside edge of the top platter surface. This drive would be a strong candidate for a head swap. I would need to buy a donor drive for this recovery, and I would try get the WD30NPVX-00N2PT0 for its heads and PCB. If you have any ideas please feel free. And thanks for your help.

Thought I'd add that we just had one of these disks and it doesn't have encryption enabled. :D

When accessed over USB with no PW configured, data will be accessible as though there is no encryption. When converted to SATA and data no longer is transferred through the USB interface (and bridge) it will appear encrypted.

I guess they all implement encryption by default, but with no added security enabled data is decrypted live during access with no need for credentials or keys etc.

No, I mean I soldered the SATA connector to one of these PCBs and the data is accessible without decryption.

No Problem. It confused us the first time, but now we've seen a few like this. :shockable:

Hi dataq,

thanks for sharing, in new usb 3.0 WD drives or old wd usb drives you found no encrypt after convert to sata pcb ?
if you not tell, i still think all usb wd external drive always with encrypt after convert to sata pcb.

Thanks,
Jinarto

Hello everyone

I have encountered a similar case, has passed USB TO SATA success, the following is a modified schematic reference!

I'm in the middle of one of these. WD30NMVW-11C3NS4 = USB.
The SATA donor I found is a WD30NPVX ... in case that helps. ($160 on ebay right now ... I didn't immediately find a smaller/cheaper one).
2060-800022 SATA is compatible with 2060-800041 USB.
Swapping the ROM to the SATA PCB booted the drive. Mine is SED locked, but I did have access to the data without having to enable decryption in the DE utility before it died.
Mine is probably going to need heads though. It's not cooperating.

One issue I'm having is that the normal means of isolating the heads to enter kernel mode and 'block SA access' is not working, and without doing this, I can't do anything else. The drive just stays BSY when heads are isolated from the PCB. Is everyone else having the same issue? Without being able to 'block SA Access', I can't unlock the SED, therefore, I can't clear the relo list (unless I'm missing something). Using the donor PCB+ROM on the Donor HD also doesn't allow the drive to show DRD/DSC after autodetect after PCB/Heads isolation.
Since this model doesn't autodetect, I used Big Bear to save the donor modules. I also tried Shrek LT, but neither work to isolate heads and start the SED setting removal.

Anyone had luck removing SED from these? What family did you use...and how?

it's a PebbleB drive family, and it should be supported in 6.2 version.

Hi Guys,
Got a couple of case of these drives WD20NMVW-11C3NS2 apparently with similar problem. Was able to solder a SATA connection so now the drive gets to DRD DSC.
But as soon as i try to enter utility it gets BSY and stays there. Like ThomasH said head isolation is not working. I assume the drive has a slow responding issue, is there any other way to tackle it?
