WDC WD7500KMVV-11BG7S0 after HSA replacement

[drmilos]

WD7500KMVV-11BG7S0 with USB interface, replaced HSA due to failed HSA. Connect via USB, spins and stops, shows in Win device manager as USB device. Identifies correctly in PC3000 (Shasta 3D), startup log, hardware modules check and SA structure test below - I have deleted most OK lines due to report length. Notice error in modules 004 and 005 in hardware modules, OK in SA; not sure about the other errors - 2D and 2E errors seem to be common even in working drives of Marvell family. What can I do to make this work?

Also, I think problem is that you try to access via USB, you should convert to SATA then identify problem. If you image under SATA you have more control over reading parameters, error control etc. Then, decrypt image through relevant mybook adaptor

you are right, it's USB interface fault. I connected the drive via COM port and I can read user data - sector 63 is FAT32 boot. What got me confused in the first place is that the drive spins and stops - other faulty USB interfaces I've seen kept on spinning.

I have posted another question on DE forum: Is there a way to mirror the drive via COM port in DE? Or is there a way to mirror the drive in PC3K utility (rather than saving one sector)?

convert to SATA by soldering ROM at U12 to compatible SATA PCB. then connected as SATA you will see same ID and capacity. Sector edit shows you encrypted sectors.


Not really sure why you have problems as it is. If you ignore WD utility and start DE task selecting your passport as source, can you read data?

To decrypt via mybook enclosure Look at native PCB, look at controller (Initio, Symwave... etc) then connect your HDD to 3.5" Mybook enclosure that uses same controller (initio, symwave...etc) then recover through here.

Quite frankly, I don't know what is the problem - when I connect the drive via USB it spins for a short while (2-3 secs) and stops.

There is no way to access user data from any application, including DE, it hangs every time with error LBA 0 or similar.

Using PC3K utility via USB I can read SA etc. but not user data.

Using PC3K utility via COM port I can read user data (I tried quite a few sectors on the drive).

Having said that, FAT32 boot sector is not encrypted when I read it via COM port. Is data transfer via COM port also controlled by Initio chip (or why it is not encrypted)?

Any access to the data, COM port or otherwise, is made through the Initio bridge on the PCB.

You say it powers then 'stops', but even if it stops you would not reach access, data or SA, so if you can read boot sector then is has not 'stopped'.

Convert to SATA and make a real diagnostic. the more you try it through USB, the faster it will deteriorate and condition will get worse. While you do not know what is the problem, and access is limited, stability is an issue and after physical work I am sure it is not as healthy as it could be, so convert to SATA, make backup of all SA resources, then test for sector access. If you can reach it, maybe there is some problem with the PCB. Check that it shows correctly as WD Passport under device manager.

do you have 3.5" mybook external enclosure with Initio controller? Alternative, image it as encrypted and decrypt once it is secured.

Is a shame there is no option within DE to 'emulate' the encryption bridge, as the key is stored on the HDD and algorithms are commonly known (at least for Initio) this should not be so difficult to implement.

For your case, I advise you convert to SATA and make real diagnostic before trying to recover, obviously there is some problem somewhere that needs to be dealt with..

Of course you are right, it also starts to spin when I read boot sector (or any other sector) via COM port in PC3000 utility. Again, stops shortly after the action.

It does not start to spin when I try to read any user sector via USB (in WD utility or DE or any other software).

I will convert to SATA, try to image and see what happens. Will keep you posted. Thank you for the advice.

As you can reach good ID, sector access is possible, SA is accessible, at this point I would assume there is some problem with the USB board, but its near impossible to confirm without seeing it.

I have done exactly as you suggested:

converted to SATA (using wires and connector, don't have compatible PCB at hand), drive came to life

cloned the drive (only 120 bad sectors),

found MyBook adaptor with identical Initio chip,

replaced U2 on the adaptor with U14 from the drive's PCB and voila!

I'm copying the files as I'm writing this.

PC3000 utility was useful to convince me that heads, SA and platters are OK and I should look elsewhere.
