SA defects assigned.............. What does this mean?

Postby 300ddr » 02.07.12, 20:26

I've been seeing this on some WD drives since the latest PC3K update when entering utility. 2 drives today, one had "6" the other "7."

Should I be doing anything when I see this to "fix" this? Or is it just for informational purposes?

Thanks!
Brian

Ive seen at least 1 assigned defect on most WD drives ive looked on. Not certain about it but I would guess its the same principle as assigned defects in Data Area and is nothing to worry about.

Thanks AJ2008! I just don't like seeing anything in "Red" when I hook up a drive :)

one of the ROM mods has a SA defect translator/list if i'm not mistaken. Most of the time SA area should not have defects as it's formatted for low density, but i have been noticing that some of WD drives have em. It is in red for a reason, i believe SA defects affect WD F/W troubleshooting/repair but just not sure "where" the problem starts... i'm assuming you can run into an issue with it when you use ABA access in SA ...

Example ... ABA 0-1-2-3-4-5 you get ABA 0-X-2-3-4-5-6 and X is where bad sector is so it can cause a shift when you use module directory to read mods. Again i'm assuming that as long as you are using native PCB and the rom mod has that defect in it, you will be fine... But what if you have issues with original PCB and you are trying to extract ROM with donor PCB from SA to rebuild ROM ?

Can somebody confirm if what i'm saying is correct ?
