Connect HDD via USB connection, then run WDC Marvel USB uility. Here you should see a box listing all USB devices, if your WD is not here then you may need to wait some more minutes.

when WD is identified, select it and press OK. Next, at family selection, you need select 'Kernel' then 'Autodetect'. The family should be identified if supported, though there are some families that are not supported. Now, you need start utility in Normal/Kernel and after loading of utility ID can be seen, and SA/ROM options are accessible

At present I think all disks are supported (Venus, Mariner, etc) except for WD10TMVV and the 750GB versions of this family, though Roustam should be able to clarify this.

Roustam, I have a WD10TMVV. The drive takes a couple of minutes to be detected by the PC as a WD My Passport 070A USB device but without access.
When trying to access the drive with the WDC Marvell USB utility the only drives visible in the list of available drives are the ATA/SATA drives attached to the PC.
Please assist.

The method for WD 2.5 drives with USB interface is next.

1. connect the drive to your PC and wait until it is identified by system
2. enter WDC Marvell USB utility and select "Kernel" option
3. press autodetect button
The family should be selected automatically.

Then try starting utility and check if drive can read SA modules etc.

If your system did not identify drive , try to unscrew the board from HDA and connect it.
In this case, utility will detect correct family and let you read/write ROM from this drive.
When correct family is detected, it is possible to write native ROM to same family drive board with SATA interface and proceed data recovery.
