Hello,

I can help with WDs as far as head swapping is concerned or head selective copying, regardless of the model and architecture.
They are indeed tricky, but can be done.
Please feel free to contact me if you are willing to send the drive: info@adatmentes.net

Hello everyone,

just to better understand, if we have this WD drive with faulty heads, should be better to replace them or not?
and by the way, if we couldn't replace them and have to turn off the damaged head, we should recalculate translator to get the data partially back?

I have a WD5000YS-01MPB0, after reassigned the head map, can access with data extractor and can see two partitions, but I can't acces the data. Any advice?

Thank you

Always image what you can before replacing the heads.
With the Ace "Ram Head map" translator recalc is not neccessary.

Hi Dobre,

thank for your reply.

What I did is to swap heads.
patient: WD5000YS-01MPB0
donor: WD5000KS-00MNB0

Same behaviour, spinning, knocking, stopping!

So I made the procedure to get the ID of the drive. Got it!

Then data extractor with "make data copy" option enabled, then from menu Service---Building heads map, but after that when I try to access the root I still got ABR error.
This issue is driving me nuts!

In fact I never use the RAM head map to gain access to data. It might be useful with the original heads, but as far as I hear, after head swapping it cannot always get things working...

Yes, Ram head map should be applied with original heads.
Once they have been changed it is to late.

As far as I know there is possibility to disable damaged head in caviar, then when you have good ID, reading system tracks and writing to donor will allow for data access after hotswap, assuming head map is built in DE from donor prior to hotswap. I have not tried myself, have not had opportunity, maybe if someone else tries they can write here to see how it goes.

We also have a few drives here that show the heads map, but when you try the heads map changing in RAM, it says "Head map not found". How do we get it to find the heads map?

You may need to manually find the Head Map in RAM through 'Resources View and Edit' option.

I can find the ROM version of heads map.

Where is the RAM version? Also, is there anywhere that specified the changes needed to be made? Is there a marvell manual out yet?
