Re: Wanting New feature in DE.
I will be very useful for me if DataExtractor could have _editable_ predefined list of files automaticaly skipped in file saving mode or even hide from explorer mode.
On this list I want to put
- all metafiles ($mft $badclus etc... etc...)
- pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys most common size i recently got is pagefile+hiberfil = 7,8gb
- user profiles dirs\....\temp\*.* !!! and temporary internet files
- system volume information
etc etc. thats why i want it to be editable.
another features but its more pckernel utilities features:
- by default saving all logs to file (can be turned off)
- eg in terminal window log it will be very usefull for me if i can see there in some brackets or something pressed keys and drives power on/off by hand and other events eg hard reset, soft reset.

Re: Wanting New feature in DE.
yes, those metafiles are really annoying, as well as temporary files.
good thinking, Aviko.

Hi
To avoide this type of issue.
What I do, is Scan MFT, then Find files, (choose type of file we want to recover) select deleted / Un deleted files only as per need and get the data. also select Interrupt saving for damage source files. when all data is copied, I get the file list skipped, for having error. Thus I have the data list for ok and damage file.

Re: Wanting New feature in DE.
Hi all
I run into the very same problems as all of you
I had to manually look into all "Documents and Setting" folders to disable temporary folders, history, internet cache, as in some cases, HDD with almost broked head might fail while saving useless temp information
Sometimes servers have a large listing of users (20+), thus making this process dangerous to the recovery operation - for example, in the case of a failing head going to sleep and broking because of inactivity while selecting folders.
But I have found a workaround using DE + R-studio:
1) run DE task in DC mode, applying the settings that best match the bad hdd situation
2) mount the drive inside the task with simulate writing
3) R-studio 4.6 (latest build), (use open drive files not scan, or it will make a full clone)
4) Switch from, "Real structure" to "Extension" tab and mark only user data (doc, xls, zip, pdf, jpg ... etc)
It is very fast and intuitive - DE must really receive an option like that
5) Save marked files marking "recover real folders structure" option in save dialog box
Done, now you can avoid most of annoyance folders not wanted by your customers very quickly
The advantages of this method:
** easy and fast filtering by filetype
** total size (GB) of all marked files
** number of all marked files
** size (GB) of remaining to be copied files
** number of remainind to be copied files
Most of this advantages are lacking in DE or slowly implemented - case of file filtering
I hope ACE developers read our posts and can implement at least some of them

P.S. I also think that a MD5 HASH would be a very nice addiction

If you are using winxp mount as read only, this will prevent mounting volume in windows but it will be still accessible thorough any dr software. This should avoid unnecessary (and unwanted in much cases) scanning/access attempts by system.
