I might be wrong, but does the message 'Switch to Full Unit' indicate heads are not faulty?

It can be either that the AppCode is damaged, but there are four copies, so it is not very probable.
Or more likely H0 is either weak or dirty. It can lock the servo and read the Reserved track defect list and also the SA adaptives, but not the appcode that is definitely bigger than those.

I would try to read the appcode manually. If the most of the sectors are unreadable, then go for head replacement.

It is still not sure MHA replacement wil solve the issue, I had some VENUSes I replaced the MHA and with a proven good MHA I could only read the adaptives, not even the appcode. The heads worked perfectly in the donor after putting them back, so they didn't get damaged.
I suppose there was some media degradation (the drives were mainly from apples and I could not find solution, the situation was same in several case).
Hopefully in your case it's just the head.
