First steps with SEAGATE & 2 rife seagate cases #1

Postby ACE_Admin » 05.02.08, 16:32

When damaged Seagate drive comes:
1. unscrew the pcb and see if contacts between PCB and HDA are dirty. You can also check - if some chips are burned, and if someone was trying to resolder some parts of it.

2. Connect the drive to utility and power it on. Check if the drive spins and if the drive makes any knoking sound.

The origin of the problem can be founded with PCB from another good known drive. (if it spins with donor - the original pcb is faulty , if it did not - then spindle motor is burnt )

3. Next way to diagnose this Seagate harddrive - is to check its terminal output. So - connect the drive to PC-3000, open the utility and switch to terminal tab(at the bottom). Then power it off/on again.

Code: Select all

Interface task reset
1024k x 16 buffer detected
ALPINE - 1_Disk S.15 01-16-03 11:51

Buzz - Head Mask 0000 - Switch to full int.
Spin Ready
Error Reading Reserve Track Defect List  -

As you can see drive could not access its Reserve track. Solution for this is trying to install compartible PCB . If the Output will remain the same as it was before - then drive needs head replacement.

On some cases I could already solve that problem by cleaning heads.

Hi,
which method you use to clean the heads?
With Isopropyl alcohol and clear paper is appropriated for this drive?

Thanks

Nico
