Seagate head compatibility

Postby -BR- » 12.06.09, 00:33

Does anyone know for sure what is the correct criteria when selecting a donor for head replacement in Seagate 7.200.X ???

For example (7200.7):
Pcb is ok, tested with one of the donors

Hdd to recover data:
------------------
MODEL: ST380011A
S/N: 5JVMTVNZ
P/N: 9W2003-371
HDA P/N: 100316339
CONFIG: D8J-02
FW: 8.01
DATE CODE: 05412
SITE CODE: WU

in red the few differences
between donors and bad hdd

Selected donor1:
--------------------
MODEL: ST380011A
S/N: 4JV070HP
P/N: 9W2003-371
HDA P/N: 100316764
CONFIG: D8J-02
FW: 8.01
DATE CODE: 05154
SITE CODE: TK

Selected donor2:
--------------------
MODEL: ST380011A
S/N: 5JVWW18B
P/N: 9W2003-399
HDA P/N: 100348969
CONFIG: CXN-01
FW: 8.01
DATE CODE: 06333
SITE CODE: WU

Selected donor3:
--------------------
MODEL: ST380011A
S/N: 5JVM28V3
P/N: 9W2003-314
HDA P/N: 100316764
CONFIG: D5C-03
FW: 8.01
DATE CODE: 05396
SITE CODE: WU

But after exchange only head mask in terminal :(

After testings, heads were returned to original donors
All of them returned to work perfectly, all 3 cases!
full lba scan test :shock:

I noticed that in top of a internal plastic piece that hold
terminals to the pcb from the inside, there was 2 writings:

Hdd to recover data:
1st = AP2-C
2nd = AG-C

Selected donor1:
1st = AP2-CK
2nd = TI-C

Selected donor2:
1st = AP2-C
2nd = TI-CR

Could it be that the 2nd marking must be AG-C ??

I opened about 8 hdds, the only one with AG-C was the bad one
All the others had TI-XX for 2nd marking and AP2-CX for the 1st
(where X stands for something or even not present)

Any advice is welcome
Thank you

We use always same model, site code, and fw, works 100% at the most seagate cases, well until 7200.11 but u could use donnor´s with same head, map, and same preamplifier code, are u sure u did correctly the head swap process, means doesnt damaged any MR sensor on the process?, because at that families doesnt need special alignment´s, another cause could be media damaged, did u tried to check by terminal, answer´s before & after head swap?

Regards

here is SEAGATE bad DRIVE,
80 GB
CONFIG: D8J-02
FW: 8.01

40 GB
CONFIG: A4K-00
FW: 8.01

this 2 CONFIG is a bad drive.
mostly head will crash and Platter got contaminated specially for A4K series...

ALL your DONOR is compatible with your patient Drive.

Hi Alberto and Steven,

First of all thank you both :D

I did check terminal before head swap, there was only head mask
I think that it's not our head procediment, since all the donors return to function perfectly and they sufer the exact same procediment
I was starting to think it was some kind of media damage, now steven's reply almost confirmed it

I will now try to clean the original head with isopropilical alchool as a last resource

P.S steven are you from ACE?
