Terminal output refers to any data the drive sends through its serial port, this includes information on its health, error codes and is much like a startup log for the drive. When you can reach a prompt with CTRL+Z it means the drive is ready to accept commands over serial port. Commands such as clearing smart can be executed here. Often many complex problems can be solved through serial only. In some cases the terminal is locked, such as in FDE drives or models with custom or OEM firmware. There are ways to reach it such as short circuit, but on times it can be quite tricky. Other cases involve a terminal output, but no option to input. Again, there are methods to reach this involving short circuit of read channels. There are many many terminal commands, many are destructive or can result in data loss. Also, many you will never need. Is best not to try to learn them all, but learn what you need and what is relevant. When you receive a case with terminal issues you can post here and this is how you can learn more, but you should be very careful when learning with terminal, always practice on a dummy drive until you have the right knowledge and experience.
