Hi !
Here is a 1 Tb Seagate Barracuda LP (7200.11 or 7200.12 ? Don't know). The hard drive has fallen on the floor. He putted it in the freezer for one night.
Now he seems to initialize, but stays BSY and click some time, then stop clicking and re-clicking... always BSY.
I opened it : I can see some impacts but no real scratches. I try to change heads, but it's the same. I put head back in the donor which works perfectly.
I think original heads are good too but I don't know how to determine where is the problem on this disk.
An idea ?

Maybe the heads positioning is not quite correct or has shifted. Also possible is some eccentricity, where platters have shifted. Both situations will require physical repairs. I think is very unlikely that problem is related to SA fault...

When I powered it, I clearly heard the "normal" initialization, so I think heads managed to read surface. If so it couldn't be exentricity or shift problem, don't you think ?

If you follow process for LED:CC error, then if there is hardware problem upon 'U' command and during spinup you will see a specific error. This error might give a beter idea of the problem.
Despite its behaviour, it does not work following a drop. To me this suggests a potential physical error.

I agree

This is not dangerous for translator with these impacts on surface ?

I only mean to go as far as 'Z' then 'U'. Upon spin up if there is physical fault you will recieve error. Sometimes this error code can be usefulin determine the exact fault...
Re: ST31000520as fallen and frozen - clicking
Done. No error appearred after Spinning up. Normal sound (initialization sound) and no clicking sound after that. But when I ask for anything else, Hdd clicks and produces scratches sounds, I think surface is too damaged in SA...
