Hi all,
I got an wd400eb-00cpf0 drive with burned PCB (the spindle motor/amp power chip is burned)
I soldered the rom to a donor PCB, and the drive powered up, but the heads began knocking. Thought it was also heads problem, i replaced the heads (2 times from the same drive donors) and the heads still knocking.
could it be that the ROM got damaged? the pc3000 utility can read the rom, but cannot write it, i guess because these models have an eternal rom.
can anyone help me with the advice how to proceed with the recovery of the drive?
thanks

Can you read ROM contents?
Or it's just trash?
You should be able to write ROM.
What's the head map?

Re: wd400eb-00cpf0 rom problem
Thats an old drive and pcb exchange is easy.
One thing you will want to look at is translator issue which can cause the head to knock
Check the manual and look for the points that need to be grounded

Re: wd400eb-00cpf0 rom problem
GURU is right, these older WD drives generally do not require ROM swap and PCB replacement is quite straightforward. Your problem is likely to be with the translator, or now there could be alignment issues also.
