I have a WD5000BMVV that will not spin up. The embedded led light powers on though.

This drive has the micro usb port and no sata. Do I need to find the sata equivelent pcb and do a rom swap?

What is the purpose of the 12 pins?

If you change the PCB to SATA (which is possible for some cases) but the disk has Smartware active, your data will remain encrypted and cannot be removed without using the Smartware sofware which will ONLY work when disk is accessed through USB.

If the disk has external ROM chip, then you may need to source identical donor with same USB interface. But in my experience with these, your problem is likely to be elsewhere, heads are probably parked wrong (stiction). Can you hear any noises coming from inside then disk when it is powered? Have you examined in clean room?

Also, might be useful to know that next version of PC3000 I believe has support SA access through the USB interface.

Ah, that would be VERY useful.

This case is not stiction. I think its pcb related but client has declined service now so I wont be spending any more time on it.

Still any word on what the 12 pins do?
