WD cloning question

Postby poehere » 29.04.09, 22:28

Hi

Have a WD drive in, could read SA, do a SA structural test, save modules and ROM. Started to clone the drive and arrived at 65G of a 160G drive and the cloning process hung and locked up the computer and pc3k. Had to reset system and when powering back on drive started to make a head noise or clicking noise inside the drive. After checking on the drive now have problem with SA LBA and SMART. Cloning started off fine with some small problems in LBA and some resets on the the drive.

Is it possible that during the cloning that the heads on the drive crashed or had a head problems in read write to cause this problem?

Did a head check and all looked good before cloning the drive

Has anyone ever had this problem when trying to clone a drive that in the middle of a clone the drive locks and the heads or SA go bad on the drive? Does anyone know the cause of this and how to prevent it from happening to another drive before cloning. If there is no visable problems before cloning the drive and during cloning the drive encounters problems.

Thank you for any help or ideas you might have on this.

If the drive has already for example a weak head, it's very probable that may die while imaging.
What you can do is set the imaging parameters so it won't make to much reading attempts when encounters some problematic sectors.
