WD10EAVS clicking

Postby DR_Ireland » 13.01.09, 13:05

Just got this drive
Model: WD10EAVS-00D7B1
WWN: 50014EE2ACD8CA0B
DAT: 01 NOV 2008
DCM: HHNNNT2MFB

Drive spins up, releasing heads and starts clicking. This is not usual loud knocking, more like gentle clicking.
Every few clicks it re-spins the motor. Registers stays at BSY
I haven't opened it yet in cleanroom but just wondering if it could be controller or MHA. Will examine it in clean room for any visible damage later.
It is not being recognized in safe mode by the utility (quite new family i guess, not yet implemented).

I need to match donor drive, do not have any in stock. What is required in this model to qualify donor for head replacement? DCM is 10-digit (in old drives it was 9-digit) so is it enough to get 5th and 6th digit match?
What is WWN?

Thanks,
Pawel

EDIT:
Opened it and examined - cannot see any obvious mechanical damage neither to heads nor top platter surface.

Hi

it is problably head problem. These drives do not click loudly uppon a head damage, but your description proposes head problem.
try disabling H0 and see if H1 can read.
U can check all heads this way, but probably it is a good idea to peek inside the HDA and check surfaces and dust and check if heads have dirt.
If they are dirty, the corresponding surfaces are damaged probably.
