what is the problem with it, do you need access to SA on it?

heres whats weird...

I could read all of the drive except for about 260,000 sectors about 3gb out.

but every sectors was zeros

except it had a partition table describing a 8mb partiton

and that partition had a bootblock that I had never seen at 0x3f

so I am wondering if someone tried to remove the encryption and managed to trigger and self-erase?

Or could the drive be lying to me and only showing zeros.

That is a correct assumption
This a self encrypting drive and it locks out the real user partition until it validates user credentials, what you see is actually virtual user space with a small bootable partition which supposed to ask you for a user name and password once you boot. And the laptop encrypts the user password before sending it to the drive to make your life more colorful and fun :) You would need original laptop and original password to unlock the drive.
Seagate also locks you out from using vendor commands on SED drives to protect IP and increase drive's security, which is, I'm sure, you appreciate very much.
