I have ST31000524AS

spins up and sounds OK

When I start utility immediately after power up I can get drive ID, after that BSY DRD/DSC and no more data access.

Power down/power up in active utility gives normal terminal output and DRD/DSC

Rst 0x20M
RW: Disc Ctlr Initialization Completed.
(P) SATA Reset

There is no other terminal response i.e. terminal is dead for approx. 15 min after power up. Drive sounds/feels like it tries to read every 3 secs i.e. there is slight vibration from the drive. Any attempt to read/write or execute service command results in BSY DRD/DSC.

15-20 mins after power up terminal becomes functional - all commands work. Those 3 sec reading cycles - vibrations stop.

Heads look OK.

I have tried clear SMART (N1), clear Alt list (i4,1,22) and translator (m0,2,2,,,,,22 and m0,6,2,,,,,22) - no difference.

Can't clear G-List, edit Drive ID or any other service command - always ends with BSY DRD/DSC and Drive is not ready - terminal remains active.

What can I try next?

After you clear lists, did you re-check V40? Hopefully it is still intact and not erased, just do not rebuild translator.

sounds like you have some relocation issues that should be addressed. There is several topics about disabling relocation parameters via HDD ID Edit feature. You should try this.

Thank you AJ2008, I have managed to open Edit HDD ID dialog box immediately after power up (few seconds later drive is BSY DRD/DSC), clear all the check boxes and hit OK - luckily I still have quick fingers from my gaming days. Drive came to life after that, cloned 98%, majority of client's data in good condition. Problem solved, thanks again.

Very recently I have get the same problem with same hdd. When i tried to translator regeneration it was completed successfully. before that i had cleared the SMART also. Now I powerup the hdd , it is showing DRD and DSC. Afterthat it showing Busy mode. Now i am not able to access the Terminal mode also. I tried for the
Edit HDD ID . that also not possible. Anybody can give Short-point of the ST31000524AS

Hello BETTY,

On the most drives reading channel line is crossed with an element, so it is easy to find two lines that go from pads to CPU on your drive board.
You should short points with a pincers when holding a paperclip with it.
Also, the moment to short is before 2nd recalibration.
When shorted properly, drive will start to click and then it will stop.
