Seagate ST3320418AS knocking

Postby sosrecup » 23.10.12, 22:07

Hi,

I have a Seagate ST3320418AS drive. When I connect it to PC-3000 power adapter, I head the head knocking against the limiting stop several times, then I powered off the drive to not damage it further.

What it could be? The drive is unable to read SA? Or a head problem?

If I have to access to the drive in safe mode to recover SA, should I connect it to PC3000 then check safe mode and restart power (even if the drive is knoking) ? Or is there another method to repair the drive?

Regards,
Lamine

Hello. This is Seagate F3 7200.12 drive.

First of all , it is good idea to check terminal output for its errors. Sometimes it is possible to
tell what problem is with this drive exactly.

But in general for these problems solution I can advise to use common procedure for Seagates.
First unscrew the top lid and check if drive has no scraches and traces of them. If there are none, then find a donor drive
and use its pcb on patient with ROM chip resoldered.
With best regards

Hi Roustam,

It’s a desktop drive and It didn’t felt down and didn’t receive any shock.

I’ve read in may posts in this forum that it can be a SERVO issue when the drive is knocking against the limiting stop.

Can the SERVO be the issue? If yes, how can I check it and resolve it?

Hi,

I get a donor PCB (the same model, site code, firmware... as the patient) except that the ROM chip are not identical (not the same manufacturer and identifier).

Can I resolder the ROM chip from the patient the donor PCB?
