There are some new methods for seagate that need a rom programmer.
Now I just need a rom reader.

Anybody out there - what do you use?
do you have a suggestion for a rom reader?

There are lots.
They range from - to expensive.
I want one thats capable of reading other kinds of common data recovery roms - somewhat universal for DR needs.

a nand read too would be nice.. - but may add too much to the price.

Can you suggest a minimal model or features I should look for

which one do you guys use?

It depends on what hard drives you are going to recover. If most of them are modern , then USB PRO GQ-4X with SOIC8 adapter will fit all your needs.

I use the "USB PRO GQ-4X with SOIC8 adapter" -- works for about 90% of the roms I get.

When you get a chance, can you expand on this?
