I am currently working on a ST31000333AS, 7200.11, 1TB which has a seized motor. I was able to get the drive to rotate; however, there is too much resistance for the motor to turn on its own. I need to move the platters to a donor; however, this drive has the inserts between the platters.

Has anyone found a way or have a procedure for changing the platters with the inserts?

HDDSYNC, SERT or own solution...

Hello Everyone
I decided to purchase the H.D.R.C, Platter Exchanger Tools (Version 4.01). The transaction went extremely smooth and within a week I had the tools in my shop (Shipped DHL Express). Since the tools were shipped to Germany, I had to pay the customs fee at the time of pickup.

The platter tools were made in such a fashion that I could lift the platters and the inserts as one unit from the defective drive to the donor. It took a few practice tries on a test drive to remove and replace the platters on the spindle before I attempted the real thing. For this one needs a very steady hand.

Unfortunetly, the hard drive suffered greater damage than anticipated and the data recovery was unsucessful.

Probably with H.D.R.C you will have much more unsolved cases, there are many conditions to lose the data of your client if you use HDRC, i bought most of HDRC tools and that are TOYS not TOOLS, if you really want not playing with data recovery on this kind of cases( Seagate with motor blocked) buy HDDSYNC or SERT. I personally have SERT

I personally modified my clean room , the SERT developers will give you some specifications to fit in your Clean Room Workbench

I work With HDRC As a Client ,all Thier Tools are always being updated ,Let me explain you what i felt this time when i met them in new delhi .

1 : Headswap tool : new magnet exchanger and puller " Excellent tool "
: small plastic manual headstack removal tool " no problem excellent "
: new headstack removing tool like hddsurgery "they are in plastic ,but i have really no idea how it
will work "
2 : Workbench : the new one made of plastic is a toy the older one is excellent "very heavy"

3 : Unstuck tool : Its Kinda Fine

4 : Platter Tool : The new total plastic one is crap ,the older one with metal ring is still better ,they are making a semi automatic and fully automatic platter and motor unstuck tool ,I love the semiautomatic tool ,i will post some pictures after 16th this month .automatic tool making is a waste of time i told them

Does the wedging of the bearing method for baracuda IV work for these drives, I have a similar case and I m thinking of giving it a shot.

The platter exchange tool that I received from them was the one that has the metal ring. This was a pretty good tool and accomplished the job. Of course, with only two points of contact on the platters it was still a challange.. Practice, practice, practice......

If I understand correctly what you meant, the HDRC platter tools will work for pulling the platters and spacers out. I bought the SERT, but currently have not used it yet. I saw that Helpdisc has a bearing exchange tool, which looked compact and easy to operate.

Now for head exchanges, I found some wonderful head reomval tools made by Helpdisc doo, from Serbia. They are expensive, but the time and effort saved is incredable. Mount the tool on the armiture, slide the fingers between the platters, drop locking pin and swing the heads out.... I used one for a couple of jobs and then did it the old manual way. Wow, I now order the tool when I need it for a job (one tool does not fit all makes and models).

FYI, I do not work at any of these places mentioned above, but I like to pass on good tips for good tools.
