What you see is the disk initialsing from ROM alone. This could be for a number of reasons:

1. HDD has LED:CC error
2. HDD has non native PCB
3. Heads damaged

If there is no knocking I would assume it is LED:CC error. for this you require shorting of the reading channels. This process is automated in newest release of PC3000. Also, in your manual you will find shorting points.
