Seagate ST98823AS (Momentus 5400.2 80 GB)

Greetings
I recieved a Seagate Momentus 5400.2 (80 GB) hard drive that clicks. I have the following questions:
1. When I hook the drive up to the PC-3000, must I also attach the PC-USB-Terminal Adapter to the drive before working on it?

2. If I have to look for a donor, either PCB or heads, what items do I have to match in order to perform a swap?

3. For the Momentus 5400.2 would I follow the instructions in the manual as stated for the Seagate 2.5" (Momentus (Neptune, Mercury))?

Thanks
Frank

Hi,

First of all, you should connect the terminal, so when you power up the drive you can see the messages it produces.
Before you know what to swap and how to, it's better to understand what's the problem.

Thank you for the response. I connected the drive to the PC-3000 and connected the usb terminal to the drive as well as teh SATA power and data connection.

When I power on the harddrive, it knocks three to four times and then becomes quite. The drive seems to be spinning; however, the BSY light does not turn off (no other lights are on). I have attempted to use the Utility section and data extractor; however, both error out stating that the drive ID can not be read.

I connected to the drive with Hyper Terminal, restarted the drive and received the following results
Interface task reset
4096k x 16 buffer detected
MERC2 - 1_Disk 0.02 12-
Buzz - 22-05 16:43
Head Mask 07,01 - Head Mask 07,05 - Head Mask 07,06 - Head Mask 07,07 - Head Mas
k 07,08 - Head Mask 07,09 - Head Mask 07,0A - Head Mask 07,0B - Head Mask 07,0C
- Head Mask 07,0D -

and that is where the output ends (the BSY light is lit).

Hi,

You have to swap heads on that drive.
