Seagate ST380819AS SMART Problems

Postby ACE_Admin » 26.09.07, 15:40

The problem happens with ST380819AS Seagate hard drive

It didnt show its Model and serial numbers and its capacity was set to 49 mb(first 999 sectors)

In the terminal it displayed the text bellow:

Code: Select all

Interface task reset
4096k x 16 buffer detected
PUMA2 - 1_Disk    0.03  12-12-05 14:40
Head Mask FFFF - Switch to full int.
              Spin Ready
3.04  12-12-05 14:42  4096k x 16 buffer
(P)SATA Reset
Restore
Age=50 Type=C9 MxCyl=164F7 MxHd=1 MxSct=44C BSz=2000 TCode=00000000

The drive reads its first 999 sectors perfectly, but it cant read the rest of them.

How to solve :

1. Going to terminal mode, and waiting until the drive goes ready
2. Pressing the ctrl-z button will follow you to T> mode. The promt will look like T>
3. Entering the first level - type /1 and press enter
The promt will turn to 1>
4. type N0, this will output something like that :
Initializing SMART Sectors...................................

now, the smart logs are cleared
With best regards

Unfortunately on Seagate HDD you can disable only suport of SMART ATA commands. But internal SMART process is wery strong integrated into FW. And can`t be disabled without serious intervention into HDD FW.
