PCB's swap compatibility

Postby Yuriy Manjilevskiy » 20.08.07, 13:38

The Barracuda hard drives can be separated in two groups : one has
parallel flash and another one has serial flash.
The first group consists of U5, Barracuda I / II / III / IV.
The second group includes Barracuda V, U Series 7, 7200.7, 7200.8,
7200.9, 7200.10 and Momentus series.

To find a donor Seagate with Serial Flash we have to find
visually same PCB and rewrite ROM, or take PCB with same ROM version.
ROM Version can be found in terminal output while powering on the
drive. For example:

AVALANCHE - 1_Disk S.33 10-23-02 10:42

S.33 - is current ROM version for that drive.

=============

For HDD with parallel flash ROM donors must be with visually same
PCB, spindle motor chip, ROM/Firmware and read channel chip.
In U5 series compatible PCB may be chosen by firmware without ROM
rewriting.

P.S. do not forget to make SA/ROM backup before PCB swap, especially for Bar.II
