ST1000DM003 - BSY, motor spins, no terminal access

Postby drmilos » 24.05.13, 16:53

I am working on ST1000DM03

When it starts it sounds a bit funny (more noise than 'normal' ST) but motor spins, no audible head knocking or scratching. Terminal shows this (I am posting beginning and end only, there are quite a few lines altogether)

After this, the motor still spins and drive stays busy. No terminal access.

If I start the drive with isolated spindle contacts I get DRD/DSC but still no ID or terminal access.

PCB is OK (I happen to have a spare and it acts the same with both).

What next? Any piece of advice much appreciated.

I have one just like this. FW CC4C. I was thinking it might be a wrong board but I popped the chip and read it directly and the S/N match the cover.

I'm guessing it's firmware related based on the sounds the heads make (normal).

My game plan is to try and figure out how to short the read channel so that I can get terminal access, as per the norm on the terminal blocking guys and see what happens.

My FW CC4C as well - looks like we have the same drive with the same problem.

It probably is a firmware issue as my drive sounds pretty normal and motor does not stop.

When you figure out how to short the read channel could you please share wit the rest of us (I'll do the same, of course) - judging by the few other posts this model still remains a bit of a mystery when it comes to terminal access.

I'm convinced we have the correct pins to short as we can get the drive to "knock" but unlike their predecessors these drives seem to be disabling serial "off the jump" ... there's never that moment of seeing a bunch of T> when you can get it shorted.

This seems like a very bad problem. I'm guessing the solution will deal with some sorta tweak to the ROM code itself but we haven't figured it out yet. Hopefully the good folks at Ace will come up with something, these are becoming more and more common on a daily basis now.

My inclination is to think that all the RW errors are suggesting that the heads and/or SA surface are damaged.
