Seagate ST1000LM014 BUSY and not spinning up

Postby goooz » 24.07.14, 19:42

Hello!

This is ST1000LM014 Hybrid 1TB+8GB. Drive stays busy, no spinning, no terminal but i could read ROM.
I can not find any defect component, so i prepaired a donor PCB with ROM from patient for access classic drive.
The drive reach ready status with spin up, but it shows me the serial number+FW from donor :?: the ROM content is 100% from defect PCB.
There must be adaptive data in Processor or in ASIC Controller.

By working with ROM and edit ID it shows me the SN from my patient but everything else is from Donor....crazy Seagates
Can anyone help or have an idea ?
Take a look at the pictures please:

OMG I CAN NOT UPLOAD ANY PICS

BOARD MESSAGE:
Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached.

Hello,

Try to replace PCB with ROM and NAND transfer. Donor should have the same model and FW.

did you check if heads are incorrectly parked on surface? (Stiction) ?

no sorry.
Yesterday my customer gave ok for further working, but i'am not sure is it the right way to change the NAND Chip or one of Controllers.
Very hard to decide. The Rework Process is not funny and i want to choose the right way.

If you are unsure how to proceed maybe you should consider outsource to someone local to you who can solve it safely.

If it is not spinning, there are only 3 possible reasons, assuming no repairs were already attempted previously:

PCB or ROM is bad
Spindle is seized
Head assembly is parked incorrectly

There are other situations such as incompatible ROM/Preamp but probably your case is one of the 3 things I listed.

Easiest way to check for PCB is to swap it for donor one with no ROM transfer. If it powers up it may not be accessible, but will confirm your original PCB is bad. Now you have 2 options, hotswap from donor to write overlays to SA then use donor PCB, or transfer ROM from patient to donor PCB.

If after change PCB there is still no startup, you should listen very closely as you power because probably you will hear drive make attempts to start but wither spindle is bad or heads are stuck on the surface making a resistance and the torque is preventing spindle from starting.

But like I already said, if you do not know how to proceed or do not feel confident with procedures such as soldering or mechanical work, you should find someone close to outsource it to until you are in a better place to do yourself.

If you never work with this Seagate Hybrid Drive please close up.
Your Comment is only usefull for classic Drives.
There is a second ROM or a second Part of ROM stored in another Chip too.

In my earlier post I mistakenly assumed this to be a Samsung/Seagate model  but in any case, much of what I said remains valid:

These have 2 added components, NAND memory and a controller for the NAND memory.

ROM remains the same and PCBs can be interchanged with no loss of data.

SSD portion acts as 'cache' for most frequently accessed data to add significant performance increase where consumer would need it most.

If PCB is bad, transfer it and transfer ROM over and access data.

These are still for the most part traditional HDD and can be treated as such.

Assuming the issue is relating to stiction or spindle issues, then anything relating to PCB becomes irrelevant anyway

This Case was checked with Tech Support and we are sure there is a second Part of ROM.
The Patient ROM is transfered to a good PCB like many times before.
After start Utltility the Drive reach ready but it shows the wrong SN from Donor. By working with ROM Image direct from this PCB it Shows me 2 Times the right Patient SN.
No SA and no Data Access!

I can not upload any Pictures in this Forum.

@AJ2008 I will check to send you a pic by PM

WOW

i've installed the good Donor PCB with prepaired ROM from Patient Drive back to Donor and i have full SA+DATA Access with wrong ROM.
The ROM Content is not from Donor !!! 2 Times found the SN from Patient.

NO, only Data+SA from Donor with ROM from Patient.
Without any logic this Case. No modern Seagate Drive will work with wrong ROM, but here YES.

I think there is a second ROM in Seagate Processor not in NAND. But i exchange both Chips.
This Job makes an external Company for me and need some Days.
