Seagate Momentus Thin 320GB ST320LT020: MCTPWrt FAILASSERT

Postby RescueDRL@gmail.com » 26.06.14, 18:04

Hi, I could not find ANYTHING on this error on several sites:

The drive's controller card alone comes ready on PC3KUDMA.

But when attached to the HDA, the drive stays BSY with the following
readout in Terminal - which Repeats as long as powered on:

------------------------------------------------------------------
MCTPWrt FAIL
MCTPWrt FAILASSERT_ID_00009650
LED:000000CC FAddr:00352A5F
Rst 0x10M
(P) SATA Reset

MCTPWrt FAIL
MCTPWrt FAILASSERT_ID_00009650
LED:000000CC FAddr:00352A5F
Rst 0x10M
(P) SATA Reset
------------------------------------------------------------------

It does not ID and shows 0.49 MB capacity.

===============================================================================
Because of the 'LED:000000CC" I just tried the Solution for LED error, and I get this:

------------------------------------------------------------------

Test : Solution for the "HDD Lock (LED: 000000CC)" problem

Switching HDD power supply OFF

Switching HDD power supply ON
COM port reconnection...
Spin Up...

Spin Up Complete
Elapsed Time 2.138 secs
F3 2>
Error starting command "En Tech" (Drive is not ready)
------------------------------------------------------------------

==================================================================

Last thing: I opened the drive in our clean room and it's a single platter
- no scratches on top, filter looks clean, both heads are present and
everything moves freely.

Basically it just stays BSY in PC3KUDMA - does not initialize, , and not
clicking but you can hear heads movement inside

I have access to an exact match Donor.....

Ideas anyone?

Thanks!!

-Chris

MC probably means media cache. Try to disable under sys file 093

Thanks AJ, but how do you disable system Module 093?

I assume that I enter PC3K interface with card only, no HDA
because only controller card part initializes.

From experience I can read or write system files, I don't know
how to disable one.

help, please.

Thanks!

Update: We did heads transplant from exact donor
and drive comes ready, but with 0MB!

I am able to do a HDD Resources Backup and I get these errors:

-----------------------------------------------------
Obtaining Saved Mode Pages File information...
Reading Saved Mode Pages...
Parsing Saved Mode Pages...
SMP Dbl: 0x3C000317 - 0x037FF7FF (0x0000000F)

LBA alignment........................... : 0

Obtaining Registry File information...
Reading Registry File...
Parsing Registry File...

Media Cache
===========
MC : enabled
MC Size : 0x0
MC MCMT Ver is unavailable!!!
---------------------------------------

and also these errors:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Module 002B, R/W Operating Parameters (translator, etc)............... : Error
Error : Rq Rd Sys File part ID 2B, Offs 0x0 err! Tech state 0x72, 0x04440000

Sys File FC34D028(0).................................................. : Error
Error : Rd SysF 3:28:0 (0/8000) err = 0x0000000E
Sys File FC34D028(1).................................................. : Error
Error : Rd SysF 3:28:1 (0/8000) err = 0x0000000E

---------------------------------------

I am not sure if those modules/files are important - how does one ever know that?

ALSO, the 0MB solution fails to fix this.

Help, still, please....

Update: After the heads transplant, the drive "ID's"
but the firmware is wrong and capacity is empty!

Model : ST320LT020-9YG142
Serial : W040JRFF
Firmware : 0001
Capacity : MB ()

With power cycling, the Terminal shows:

--------------------------------------------
(S) SATA Reset

Rst 0x10M
(P) SATA Reset

M_FT_IF_MC_Mct_Init_Fail 1
[PORFAIL:MC.disabled]

-------------------------------------------

I am still hoping for a little more help here, please....

-Chris.

After heads transplant with new heads, after you see ID is spindle still powered or it stops?

Also, SN in ID matches drive label?

you need to read 093 sys file. This will give access to relocation parameters and also will allow disabling of media cache.

Also, module 002b is translator so if this is bad this would result with 0MB capacity.

Hi AJ. The drive continues to spin. Before, it had constant noise like it's trying to seek,
or just constantly moving - but not a classic click sound. Now, it spins up, comes ready
and keeps spinning quietly.

The serial number matches perfectly.
------
I am a little lost on this 093 sys file. The Media Cache I can disable from "Edit HDD ID"
I just uncheck it, the utility power cycles, I check again and it stays un-checked.
===>Is that sufficient?

Lastly, is Module 02B unique to this drive? or can I write one from an exact Donor?
If it is not unique, how would I fix it? _NEVER MIND, I just did a Modules Read and I
no longer have the 02B module error, but 2 new ones:

Module 0013, Disc Registry File (settings, security, etc)............. : Error
Error : Rq Rd Sys File part ID 13, Offs 0x0 err! Tech state 0x72, 0x04440000

Module 001B, Log File................................................. : Error
Error : Rq Rd Sys File part ID 1B, Offs 0x0 err! Tech state 0x72, 0x04440000

Comments, please....

Thanks!

Hello RescueDRL@gmail.com,

First of all backup next sys.files:

1. vol 0x03 sys.file 0x0035 copy 0x00
2. vol 0x03 sys.file 0x0028 copy 0x01
3. vol 0x03 sys.file 0x0093 copy 0x01

Save the data to profile folder and proceed with next sys file

vol 0x03 sys.file 0x017A copy 0x00

It is safe to test donor heads writing on this file, so try to rewrite it with 0x017A file from other Seagate drive with same family.
Read file after it was written.
