ST3500320AS strange problem

Postby kyriakosxn » 07.01.11, 02:27

Hello,

I have a strange problem with this HDD:
ST3500320AS 7200.11 500GB
FW: SD15

It came with burnt PCB and i replaced it from a donnor drive and i did ROM swap.
When i turn it onthe drive spin with strange clicking noise and it takes about 1 - 1.5 min to initialize and become ready.
I managed to start DE and create head map and image heads 0,1,3. When the dirve try to access H2 it starts again clicking noise, but it reads very very slow (plese look the photo) after some sectors it stops clicking and start imaging normally for few sectors until the clicking sound come back again. I did heads swap from another 2 good drives but the same problem continues. Head test gives good results in UDMA. Can anybody explain me why this happen? If i continue imaging this way it will take me months to finish. The red and black sectors in photo can be read if perform repetitive readings. for some reason the HDD loose readines and do reset all the time. If i increase PIO waiting time then the DWF register is turning on and the drive start giving black sectors. when i turn off and on the HDD becomes ready again.

Any sugestion is welcome.

Regards,

Kyriakos.

after creating head map in DE and while H2 is weak
you may disable reading from it and continue for while then enable it back and continue dumping
then analyze the dumped files again
