ST1000LM024 - BSY - Tried everything, nothing works :(

Postby SlingShot » 07.12.19, 20:32

Hi Guys

Been working this thing for a short while and have tried many things, but to no avail.

Drive came to us after being with other people who had been fiddling with it. They decided the motor was the problem.

Drive was initially dead, could not get the thing to spin up at all, so to resolve the issue of the motor being the problem, I swapped everything over to a new chassis.

Drive spins up but is stuck in BSY state and after receiving some help with identifying the PCB, it turns out not to be the native PCB, great.

Heads were also beginning to slightly knock so decided on getting an exact matching donor and swap them out (Ordered from donordrives.com)

Head swap completed, drive spins up nicely but still stuck in BSY mode.

Now to try the hot swap method for SA access, following the guide on the blog, it went fine and drive spins up when trying to read modules after the hot swap. Drive cannot read any modules without error

I try various tweaks of initialisation with head mapping in RAM, non work, they all just end up like this

Code: Select all

   Selected parameters
   Heads map............................... : 1, 1, 1, 1
Disable record in service area.......... : No

   Memory map building..................... : Ok
Search for free memory space............ : Ok
   Search control point.................... : Ok
Search table of zone translation address : Ok

Creating a pointer to executable code... : Ok
   Source code patching.................... : Ok
   Head map setup.......................... : Ok
   Heads map............................... : 1, 1, 1, 1
   Normal mode

   Drive not ready
****************************************
Test interrupted

The terminal output on spin up is this:

Code: Select all

ActiveFW : 00
FWVer : 0001
SATA PLL cal done

Hotswap
maybe replacing Overlay will help but if error is surface read issue as opposed to corrupt module content then hotswap is better option for you

I have tried the hot swap method but only get errors and no sector access. Would you care to elaborate please, maybe I am missing something ?

Thanks.

To quote the man himself (AJ2008; nice to see you again!) from a previous post I saved, "but for me I prefer to make HotSwap and write both donor overlay modules to patient SA (on all copies) and then you can reach data with donor PCB."

Sounds to me like the non-original PCB's ROM referenced an incompatible preamp version causing the drive not to spin (terminal would have said this). After a platter and head swap, the problem may be something else. But, without original ROM, AJ2008's suggestion is the best next option.

Thanks Brian, this is something I will try next, rather than just trying to read the modules, I will attempt to write the 2 overlay modules (all copies) and see if I can gain access.

So tried the hotswap with overlay writing, still stuck in BSY.
