HM322IX No Power USB Only

Postby Towerrat79 » 04.04.16, 16:08

I have a HM322IX which also had no power. I traced the voltage and found that the chip T056 (Black square one by the USB Connector) was bad. I exchanged this one with one from another USB only drive and it started up and am now recovering the data.. Testing voltage was easy.

With the negative lead of a multimeter on the USB ground, touch the positve lead to one of the eight pads under the T056 chip. It will meausre about 5V.
Directly across from the 8 pads there is a lead coming from under the chip (Leftside) up to a resistor. If you now touch the positive lead on it, it will measure about 4.9 volts.
Mine was showing 0 volts on the resistor, so I changed out the chip and began recovering the data.

Thanks for posting your success story.

Most probably T056 chip is a ZEN056V130A24LS Zener diode micro-assembly so you are right in replacement, without this chip drive will not be powered.

Thanks for sharing. I suppose in a pinch you could even just bypass the chip entirely.

Jared ,
Thats Possible But it Has a PTC Thermister In Series Posing Some Resistance .The Zener Looks As If Its Used For Protection

I have no doubt it's part of the protection circuit. I'm just saying it'd probably work without it in a pinch. That zener diode ranges from .12 to .16 ohms, so you could just throw a .15 Ohm resistor on there I suppose too. Though in all honesty I'd probably just move the ROM over to a SATA board and be done with it. PCB repairs has never been much interest to me when it's so easy to just replace them.

The problem with this PCB is (for me) that there was no External ROM. So it was a quick fix just to move the one component.

I do have to look for some new topics of interest. I will most likely do one on moving a task from the DDI over to the PC3K and continue on where one left off.
