Hi all,
i have here tree WD red from NAS.
When open the WDC Marvel Util recognize the HDD with Serial, Model an korrect capacity. But now, when i try autodetect, an error ocours:
"Techno key error Device Error Detected: "SUCCESS""
So i think, this drive is not supported. Correct?
With best wishes to 2018

Re: WD80EFZX-68UW8N0
I highly doubt it's a supported family being so new. But, you can probably just select another recent family and still access SA.
Re: WD80EFZX-68UW8N0
Thank you i have tried any Family. no SA Access. HD is blocked.
I think the mod 32 is to full, because in normal PC the HD will not recognized
In DE i could read the sectors. So try i make a copy.

Re: WD80EFZX-68UW8N0
Device will be SED and access will be limited. Can you short read channels or connect PCB alone to try to get access to kernel mode? Do you know SA version? Maybe with blocked regions and a loader you can get SA access and clear 32?
Re: WD80EFZX-68UW8N0
Thank you AJ2000
I will try your tips in next days, beause i having make a copy in the meantime with DE.
Now i have a second hdd same type. Correct S/N and type, but no access to user area..

Re: WD80EFZX-68UW8N0
These drives are Hitachi arch and are not supported by ACE at all.
Re: WD80EFZX-68UW8N0
find 10 differences

The most common problem on this family is media damage.
If the drive does not unpark heads then it has MD
PS: there is no support for this drive in PC3K

Re: WD80EFZX-68UW8N0
I should have google image searched this drive to see what it actually looked like. Yeah, definitely a HGST drive. Helium-filled no doubt too.
Re: WD80EFZX-68UW8N0
This is extremely disappointing. We have one WD101KRYZ and two WD80EFZX drives with what seem like firmware errors.
We unscrewed the PCB to take a look (since they look nothing like WD drives we're used to), and they look very similar.
As mentioned above, the PCB seems to be the same one used in some HGST drives:

After noticing the similarity between these drives and the HGST one mentioned above, I tried using all the Hitachi/IBM/HGST utilities available in PC-3000 with no luck.
Any idea when (or if) these drives will be supported?

Re: WD80EFZX-68UW8N0
I'm sure they'll be supported, they're just super new at the moment. Gotta let some time go by for Ace to reverse engineer them.
Whenever I see a drive come in that's less than a year old, I warn the customer up front that there's a possibility that data recovery tech hasn't caught up to the model yet.

They are not that new, they just hard to work with
Ace knows about these drives for two years already but it is not an easy nut to crack

Re: WD80EFZX-68UW8N0
Does anyone here know how to access FW modules on those drives ?
Do they use the same ARM based arch ?
Can someone provide the "Super ON" to access modules assuming the arch is still the same as the older ARM based HGST models ?
If we can figure out the "Super On" and if the arch is the same we should be able to read the modules without any major problem.

Re: WD80EFZX-68UW8N0
Looks like that those drives do have CPs on ROM (like Toshiba) and SA modules.
Arch of those drives are absolutly different from traditional "ARM" on HGST.
"CODF" CP on ROM defines family of the drive (ARIES HC8 SATA), firmware version (A4GNT514) and generation level (ccb6p):
CODF
T515000
515
09/03/14 12:18:58
A4GNT514
ARIESHC8SATA
RELEASE
bldcrew
fjofficial1
Y:/ccb6p/R515/library/ARIESHC84KA4GNT515
There is a section of "classes" which suggests that the ROM contains or supports several code modules.
10HiMgrClass
12AEGen20Class
12SataMgrClass
12UartMgrClass
13AEDetachClass
13HiDefragClass
13MfgHiMgrClass
14AEPrivateClass
14SecAkeMgrClass
17ComboChipHALClass
17ComboTaygetaClass
18ComboPleiadesClass
18SecAkeGenericClass
19SecAkeEchostarClass
24SecAkeFranceTelecomClass
N10__cxxabiv117__class_type_infoE
N10__cxxabiv120__si_class_type_infoE
N11AtiMgrClass17SpecIteratorClassE
N11AtiMgrClass24W2CDataSpecIteratorClassE
N11AtiMgrClass25W2CSpareSpecIteratorClassE
St9type_info
ROM does have a table of SA modules as well. There is a DIR and a FAT module that suggest that the SA file system has a FAT-like structure.
A second table follows the first with modules that look like CPs and are ROM resident.
The first ROM resident CP is FSVG and the previous CPs in the table are not ROM resident. So some CPs are stored on platters as well.
Security on those drives might be set on CODF CP (ID = 82h), FCOD CP, GNRC CPs or FSEC (ID = 98H).
More investigation is needed ...
I will get one drive of this model to unlock very soon (it's on the mail now). When i do get it i will further investigate and i will post back.
Hopefully ACE will add support for those drives soon but as far as i can tell it's completly different from any other HGST (IBM NATIVE) arch so it might take some time for ACE to add support for those ... This will be my first one WD80EFZX-68UW8N0 so i still don't know what i will be able to do ... I never had to work with one of those ... Hopefully i will figure out a way to access SA or at least to unlock the drive by patching ROM ... Looks like the security CPs are ROM resident so ... maybe i will be lucky .
