WD Passport USB3 Disks

Postby antonvn » 26.09.17, 17:04

Hi all,

Lately I am getting a few of these disks for recovery. There is one problem with these disks and the ACELab documentation - how do I find out what the family is? In the utilities, I am presented with n list of families to choose from, there is nothing printed on the disk, I cannot get auto-detect to run because something is wrong with the disks, so where can I get the information? Is there a table somewhere that I do not know about? Without the family information I can not do anything, so guys, let me in on the secret please..

These newer 3tb and 4 tb drives are not well-supported via USB interface. You have a couple of options. You can read the ROM via terminal and copy to SATA version of PCB, or you can solder SATA connectiion directly to USB PCB. This procedure is outlined elsewhere. As far as choosing the correct family, it's convenient to select PebbleB to get into the utility. Once you have access to SA you can refer to module 00C5 to determine actual family. I know that for the 4tb drive the family is Spyglass, which is not yet listed. However, you can work using Pebbleb family. Note that the SATA version of PCB are different for the 3tb vs. 4tb models.

If you're just trying to find out the family, you can use this search tool I made: https://www.data-medics.com/forum/wd-fa ... t1778.html
