He He ,
Good catch by me on this one

better way to connect terminal port on 800041 board

this is easier just add 2 pins to the board and connect...

you dont need ground, aces adapter doesnt use ground.
the toshiba adapter 1 pin offset method has no ground.
the maxtor calypso adapter to the 3.5 wd only uses 2 wires.

Well,
100% if my electronics experience serves me correct ground is needed ,Its just that its being used by power connector like conventional on sata hods and usb one from modern usb drives .How about totally isolating the device from the same pc as pc-3000 and trying just rx,tx pins i am sure its not gonna work .

It might. If both computers are grounded to the same electrical system. I don't know about there in India, but here every structure built or renovated in the last 50 years is fully grounded. So generally something like a com connection will still work because all devices ultimately are sharing a common ground. They just need that same common point of voltage reference.

Now if you ran one device off a generator or a UPS that's unplugged it wouldn't work for sure.

Jared ,
If We Have a Laptop on the other end without being connector the power its on a different ground plane .GND is necessary for such connections

Who is using a laptop to do professional recovery? This is Ace Forum, you can't plug a PC-3000 into a laptop generally.

Contrary to my previous position....

I have found difficulties reading the roms with just 2 pins.

I used alligator clips and grounded the board to the computers chassis

And then I could read without issues.

So - yes you do want the ground.

Maybe before it was grounded through the usb power, not sure but use the ground.

I am trying to copy the rom from usb wd drive to sata compatible board
is there is any better documentation we can find somewhere

Here is the connection for WD USB 2.0 drive:
Image ((((No Image))))
Hard drive has 6 pins in one row. So, PC-Toshiba adapter is connected, and three pins are left free(((which 3 pins left or right)). Please check the picture above.

Here is the connection for WD USB 3.0 drive

Hard drive has two rows of 6 pins. PC-TOSHIBA adapter has to be connected onto top row. The drive position has to be same, it is on picture.((((No Image))))

As soon, as new manuals for PC-3000 WD USB utility will be ready, it will appear in personal update box, manuals Western Digital section.

This type of connection is already described in WD USB manual from customer's update box. WD 2,5" terminal adapter is recommended to use.
