looking through the forums there are many questions about the rom adaptives in seagates - but no many answers.

Could you post some information, procedures, meanings etc. - thanks

I have an st31000dm003.
swapped heads - kind works but very slow.
So I tried the import rom adaptives.

1) Do I want rap cap sap - what are they ?
2) If I pick "head parameters" it sometimes asks for "BLOCK1" or BLOCK2 - How do I know which?

I imported the rom adaptives from the donor head.
Then I saved the "NEW" rom.
3)Then I compared the NEW ROM with the ORIGINAL _ guess what ? No difference....

So... the head adaptive import would be more useful if it showed what it was doing and what changes it was making.
4)In WD I can edit the microjogs and preamps - where is that for SEAGATE?

5)How about an error message saying no adpatives found - or something.

6) when do we use the "SLOW SEEK" checkbox ?
7) When do we use the "STOP RECAL AT OD" checkbox?

There are 7 questions here - can we get 7 answers?

One important point to note: some ROM chips on this family of drives cannot be written to by the PC3000 even though it appears to be writing properly. I have run into this problem with several of these drives; I had to remove the chip and place in in an external burner to write to it. I imagine this is why you didn't note any difference in head adaptives after you tried to re-write ROM. Apparently there are different writing voltage requirements for these chips. Also I have been told by Ace that only head adaptives need to be imported, not RAP+SAP+CAP.

rom corruption.

I think you can get rom corruption by reading at too high of a baud rate.
or
flaky terminal adapters.
I bought some ebay terminal adapters, they were terrible, when I looked up the chipset I found
that there were counterfeit chips that didnt work right.

so its best to read the rom twice and compare

Hi everyone,

RAP - Read Adaptives Parameters. Zone + have a lot of importance.

IAP-Interface Adaptive Parametres. This data block is replenished when using HDD container of flags, such as Spinup at Power ON - spin the engine when powered. The container may be empty, if the flags are not diverted. Not critical for the heads.

SAP - Servo Adaptives Parameters. Servo. One of the most important. Read the data, holding position.

CAP - Controller Adaptives Parameters. Model, capacity, WWWN, serial.

There are 2 modes of heads adapting
- adapt RAP + CAP + SAP + IAP - if native ROM is damaged and we take donor's one and remove in it all the unique.
- remove heads adaptives in SAP - it is for the head transplantation.

There are a few different flags that manage the drive.
One of them - name - seagate name. 
Calibration goes in a few stages. 
- ID-OD (inner-outer)- from center to the edge. Calibration current positioning.
- Thermal calibration and other in the middle of the range, or in the the space provided. If truncated at ID-OD greater the chance that a clumsy heads will run.
Slow Seek. There is timeout definition. If the surface is read bad in slow mode, the controller have more time to try to position before the decision is issued on the refusal of reading. In theory, we get a more stable behavior. In practice, differently, the reverse effect can be obtained. So, the relationship is quite weak, we have a situation "does not try - do not know."

i have same issue can you write steps for both modes ?

When you change heads, you may have to transfer head adaptives from donor to patient ROM.
First backup both ROMs.
Then follow Tools->Utility extensions->Work with flash ROM file command. There is an icon with "DATA" word on it, so load patient ROM then press it and move donor head adaptives to it.

once done the procedure i have to write this fixed rom back on the patient rom ?

For head adaptives transfer you have to import adaptives from donor ROM into patient ROM.
For CAP-RAP-SAP-IAP parameters you write donor ROM then transfer patient parameters into donor ROM.

Dmitriy_TS: can you guide how to choose correct head compatible replacement for patients for ST...DM00, DM002.

Donor drive for Seagate F3 must have the same:
-model,
-head map,
-country (manufacture),

Also be sure to match the first three (maybe even 4) letters of the serial number, and the full P/N if possible, then from among what you find there get the one with the closest date code. With these you really want to get a close match. That having been said, there's also a lot of cases I've seen where it seemed at first to be a heads issue but turned out to be either firmware or media cache related and the heads were fine. So be sure you've ruled out everything before resorting to heads replacement.

it really is not clear. Sometimes I was change head from including model. P/N. First 3 numbers of S/N and producing contry. but failed
