Hi all,

Dealing with an ST8000DM004 hard drive. Client said they left the drive copying data overnight (which failed) and now drive doesn't spin up. I've done a headswap with suitable donor but now get 2 clicks and spin down, in terminal output is:

I've tried swapping PCB and transplanting ROM chip, just to also rule out PCB issue but still the same terminal output. Head swap went good and no obvious dust/scratches on platter. I've read a few things on here where others have mentioned trying to change the max heads in rom to 0 or editting head map.

I can read the ROM via terminal but when I click on change head map I get an error "cannot set up head map info". Is there another way to set max heads to 0?

What else could problem with drive be, media damage? Or just unlucky with it being a Seagate?

Try to put doner heads back in doner and check if they survived.
Set max heads is not currently supported for that family, you will need to change it manually in ROM.

How can I manually change max heads in rom? I've always used the functionlity within PC3K, never had to do it manually before. Any help/guide is much appreciated.

Changed heads. I know the platter 08 is damages so i need to turn off heads 08. But i don't see any buttons PHY HEAD, NOR HEADS MAP CHANGE SAP
