Any ideas what could cause this problem?

Looks like you have terminal trouble. Is terminal connected ? Is ROM unlocked ?
When drive comes ready a ST8000AS002 should detect as 8B Lamarr.
If drive goes BSY on reading ID, terminal output typical will give you a hint to continue troubleshooting.

Thank you for the hint. In the Settings windows on the right hand side I had to enable the additional diag messages.
