ST1000DM003 strange problem

Postby emir_has » 28.02.18, 21:00

Hi

When I start this disk on Terminal I get only this message and quick constan beep beep beep:
Boot 0x40M
Boot 0x40M
Boot 0x40M
Boot 0x40M
Boot 0x40M
Boot 0x40M

Cannot access terminal, changed PCB even prepacked in other HDA because I thought that motor is problem.
Can someone tell me what could be? I have managed to save ROM.

Thanks

What does, "prepacked in other HDA" mean?

Constant 'beep beep' could relate to head error (either failed or stuck) or spindle problem, but it is not clear from what you wrote. I imagine by 'prepacked in other HDA' relates to transferring entire platter stack to donor enclosure? After this it still gives 'beep beep' ? Does spindle start? Were heads parked correctly before and parked correctly now?

I do not think shorting will help you, and if you are unable to progress further then at this stage is better to find someone who will look at it for you who can deal with it because these are not great drives to work on and is quite difficult to advise anything - if motor was bad, it should now spin in other HDD housing, if heads were bad you would get different error at terminal and spindle will still start, for heads stuck on platter you would notice this when you opened it, you already change PCB - really, this should at least be giving different symptoms, regardless of whether everything was carried out correctly or not.

Hi

I have swaped heads and still no luck. Yes I have transfered platter do other HDA because this disk has one platter and 2 heads so it was easy and i tought it has problem with spindle motor.
When I transfered head back to donor, donor has start to show :
Boot 0x40M
Boot 0x40M
Boot 0x40M
Boot 0x40M
Boot 0x40M
Boot 0x40M

Try to set compatible donor PCB with the patient ROM chip together with new donor heads.
Possible problem is damages/shorted PCB, as result Heads preamp. chip was also burnt.
Now every time when yo set donor heads they are die immediately after power on, 'cause drive still has damaged PCB whichs kill every new heads.
With best regards
