Apricorn Fortress drive asks to format

Postby osity » 18.12.17, 18:25

Client has an Apricorn drive. (picture below). I have the code to unlock but when it's plugged and unlocked windows wants to format the drive.
Drive is 100% functional.

I can see data in hex but a logical scan brings up nothing but junk files. The drive has On-the-Fly 100% Hardware-Based Encryption which is supposed to be decrypted after entering the code.

Can PC3K do anything with this type of encryption?

When you look at the data in hex (after putting in the key) does it look encrypted where you'd expect to see zeros? such as near the end of the drive?

Yes it looks like the drive has data all the way to the end when viewed in a HEX editor and although its not repetitive characters.... it looks like it's encrypted.
I was thinking the encryption key somehow got wiped but that's just a guess on my part.

Hi,
This looks like a Simple Toshiba drive .Did you take this out and see the sectors ,did you try some typical raw recovery file headers if yes and nothing is showing then its 100% sure the device that this drive is inside is doing on the fly encryption .How About Cloning The Toshiba Drive With The Same Toshiba Drive And Modding The New Toshiba hdd serial no etc and adding into this device again and see if its able to decrypt :D

It is a simple drive. The only thing special is the shell which does encryption on the fly when you unlock it with the neat number keypad.
I tried a logical scan with it in the case once unlocked but I have not tried physically taking it out of the shell.

That cloning sounds like a shot in the dark.. i would imagine encryption keys are randomly generated and unique every time they are applied.....

Well,
i am 50% ++ positive it should work i am of the opinion his native hdd is ailing and if he can match the serial no etc with old hdd might be he can fool the device

A bit for bit clone using R-studio worked perfectly.
