whats' the easiest way to connect 8 drives to a PC?

Of course I could use 8 HDD docs but that's a bit nuts.

I was thinking of using a PCI-e 6 port SATA controller and two onboard SATA controllers. Or I could go with 2X 4 port controllers.
If this is a good approach, can anyone recommend a reliable controller? I've heard bad things about SYBA.

I noticed that one has RAID.... Is there a non raid version?
In the pic it doesn't show 8 ports. I'm assuming I can just not use the RAID function?

Look for a mini-SAS to 4x SATA cable.

Oh the connecters on the card are mini SAS?
So I guess you don’t get any cables with it.
it sounds like I would need the card and two mini Sas to 4x SATA cables... :umnik:

I just ordered it with the a bunch of cables. Thank you!

It needs to be HBA card not RAID controller - RAID controller often will not mount drives unless they are an active RAID configured by the card. HBA will simply mount them as individual disks.

Any of the Microsemi HBA 1000 Series adapters should do the trick - https://www.microsemi.com/product-direc ... 60-hba1000

If you are looking for a short-term quick and dirty approach, another alternative is an 8 port USB3/eSATA hotswap enclosure by Startech - https://www.startech.com/HDD/Enclosures ... 358BU33ERM

It seems flashing to IT mode was unnecessary.

startech 8 drive enclosure - $391

or

or couple of 5 port stat multiplier cards on ebay $17 each....

you know, sata is cascadeable, you plug your sata cable into the port multiplier and it becomes 5 sata ports.

you need the appropriate sata controller - but I think its standard with all the recent (last few years) sata cards, check your sata specs.

You need a none RAID SAS controller. If you get a SAS controller you can attach SATA or SAS drives to it.
