Is there an absolute timeout minimum for PIO and UDMA where the read retries start work?
I've noticed that they start to work around the 1500ms - 2000ms for me.
Read retries done't seem to work until a higher time out is set

It all depends on the drive. Different models will take a different amount of time before returning an ERR. So if your timeout is lower than the time it takes for the drive to error out, it won't do those retries. You can, however, configure for retries even on timeouts in the other tab.

Ah..over the years I've always wondered why it seemed to vary. I'm referring to the 'reading retries' under 'error handling' tab.
Alternatively I've just run several passes. What other tab has retry option?
Are you referring to 'Attempts' in the 'loss of readiness' tab? doh! I've never seen that before!

If that's the one you are referring to, it seems that it's limited to 9 attempts
