Rosewood_A5 / Error: Translator regeneration error! Err: 0x9

Postby tdrc » 25.07.17, 23:36

I'm running into an issue with a ST2000LM007-1R8174, was able to unlock the SA and clone the first 50M sectors. Then the drive started to error, discovered that the translator was corrupted, attempted a "Recover Translator". It was only able to get to 50M. Tried the Single LBA Adjustment and it produced the Err: 0x9. After that I get the same error if I attempt to use the "Recovery Translator" method. Any ideas what may be causing this?

Thanks for any help, thrilled about the new update!

Did you backup sysfiles before translator regen?

Yes, I attempted to write 28 back, but receive an Unsupported FW message when I try to write it.

Its because write sysfiles is not implemented in FW of such disks

You can write a system file via ATA indirect mode when you have the drive in ready state.

Dimitry,
Can You Explain Difference Between Direct ATA And Indirect ATA Mode ?

Dear Amarbir,

Amarbir[CDR-Labs] wrote:Source of the post Can You Explain Difference Between Direct ATA And Indirect ATA Mode ?

ATA direct mode uses three parameters to access the system file such as:
1. Volume
2. File ID
3. Copy

ATA indirect mode operates with more parameters and it is useful for some families: Wyatt, Brinks, Rosewood etc.

Having problem where none of the system write methods work. "Terminal" method thinks it worked but doesn't "stick." ATA (direct) and ATA (indirect) just cause drive to go from ready to busy. Thoughts?

Hello AceLabs Support

I think it would be a really good idea for your next blog post to publish a typical step-by-step diagnostic test and commands for Rosewood drives. These disks are difficult to work on, and I have found that donor heads can be unstable and fail in a short period. Powering the HDD off and on multiple times should be avoided. It would be useful to know the best method to assess these.

Thanks.

For the drives where system files are read via ATA direct mode, you can read system file by typing volume, file id and copy of the file in the top sys files tab.
For the drives where system files are read via ATA indirect mode, you have to upload module and system files table in the utility and then check the box of the system file in the sys file tab to read file. You have to follow this procedure because of ATA indirect mode requires mode parameters (Volume, FileID, Copy and other). When you check the box you lay down system file parameters automatically.

No other solutions for such drives except Heads/surface checking.
There are a little chance that it's PCB's issue but it's approx 5% cases with such terminal error message.

Well Filipp ,
PCB issue should not be a concern of any Data recovery engineer with PC 3000 Tools ,There is No Big Deal To Read Patient ROM And Transfer This To Donor Rom And Tryout
