"invalid source device type" error when opening task

Postby osity » 20.10.16, 18:51

Sometimes when trying to open a task that was closed I get an "invalid source device type" error. I cannot proceed with the task when I get this error.
In these cases I have not changed any settings or even unplugged anything. I just closed a task shut down the drive overnight and later tried to reopen it.
Any idea what could cause these and how I can avoid them?

We saw this for the first time yesterday. We were done the image and wanted to work with the copy only, but could not even get to the window were we could make the selection. As we knew we had 100% of the sectors imaged, we just moved to a different system and used R-Studio to copy the files out. Otherwise, we'd have to create a new task and import the map.

This happened to me again two days ago after imaging an entire side of a platter. I just restarted a whole new job. Such a waste of time.

It is super complicated...get your pen and paper handy.

1. Create a new task, with a different task name
2. Close new task
3. Copy the map from the old task to the new task
4. Open new task
5. Recalc stats
6. Carry on

Recalc stats is an option if you dig into the menus in DE. It just recalculates (updates) all the sector statuses. i.e, timeouts, errors, unread, already read etc.

I watched one tech from Ace login and try a similar procedure....he also fiddled with the PRM file ...He deleted the original PRM files and replaced them with the newer ones. It sorta worked for him. I think the cause of the problem is in the PRM file.

I will have to try this more simplified procedure of just moving the .bin files sometime. It really should be that simple.

Thanks Luke!

Amarbir: You right click on the sectors in DE map and select 'Recalc'.
